Sit down I think I love you
Anyway I'd like to try
I can't stop thinking of you
If you go I know I'll cry

So if you want someone to love you
Pretty babe I'm your guy
It's not much I'm asking of you
Just please give me a try

The future is here. Not the future of Neuromancer, Gibson's seminal 1984 novel. Despite the posturings of "Black Hat" and "White Hat" and "Grey Hat" haxx0rs, the computer criminals of 2003 are depressingly banal boiler-room scamsters who have all the cunning of a cabbage and whose PENIS ENLARGEMENT come-ons are as romantically raffish as the LOSE WEIGHT NOW ASK ME HOW sticker on the back of a dented 10-year-old four-cylinder minivan. Worm writers are less a testament to fiendish coding as they are to the fundamentally stupid security model of Outlook. None of these pissants deserve the noble title "con artist" -- they don't have the elan to class themselves with Yellow Kid Weil and the High-Ass Kid.

"Are you a hacker?"
"uh... no."
"Well, do you know how to code?"
"You know any high level languages?"
"like what?"
"Perl, Python..."
"Yeah, sure."
"Then you're a hacker."
I shake my confused head, and mumble to myself.

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.
Quick now, here, now, alwaysó
A condition of complete simplicity
(Costing not less than everything)
And all shall be well and
All manner of thing shall be well
When the tongues of flame are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.

Here I am.: .posted by ben on Jun 19 at 22:43

Here I am sitting at Devin's laptop somewhere in the middle of the mountains in an empty house with an ever friendly dog. And I'm wondering, could I walk into the houses of people I don't know and use their laptops to post to wasabi?

The cat even likes me.

I think it's quite possible that I could sneak into houses and drink laproig and no one would notice. I could live in houses that are for sale in undersireable areas... because I know those sorts of houses aren't shown all that often.

This seems easier than being a useful member of society... and I can envision Henry Miller doing it... sneaking into some house and waiting for the owner to come home... then he charms her because he can do that. I need to learn how to do that.

Let's go back to my place and beat our breasts proudly as we cry havoc against the end of time. And though it is a battle we cannot win, we will join it willingly till our spirits are wiped clean in the void. On that day we can cry for each other and drink spoiled wine.

Recipe for happiness in Khabarousk or anyplace:

One grand boulevard with trees. One grand cafe in sun with strong black coffee in very small cups. One not necessarily very beautiful man or woman who loves you. One fine day.

Last night I met some obscenely attractive Italian-American who spent the last year painting in Florence. She reads Calvino in Italian and told me about a poet named Pascoli. I intend to read some.

While I was oppressing Mexicans, she was building them roofs in Tecate because she is a good person.

She, like every other pretty happy person, is a student at Naropa. And she studies writing but likes her painting better. And I say: Good for you, immerse yourself in art and beauty!

When she left she said we'd she each other again, but I think she was only being kind.
