I had a roommate, and I drove her nuts, I mean really nuts, they had to take her away in an ambulance and everything, but she's ok now, but she had to transfer to an easier school, but I don't know if that had anything to be my fault, but listen, if you ever need to talk, or help studying just let me know, cause I'm just a couple doors down from you guys and I never sleep ok?""

So, apparently Kerry won the Iowa caucus. If he wins the rest, Bush will almost certainly be president again.

I need more science fiction. Now that I've watched all DS9, I'm not sure what to do. Voyager starts coming out soon, but I've always hated it. There's always Red Dwarf, but I remember it being fairly stupid.

What I'm thinking is... that if Bush wins, maybe I won't need a science fiction fix anymore. Between his plans for super genius lasers in space and Paul Allen's funny little 2 piece spaceship I might not need science fiction anymore.

So, while it's regretable that Bush has been getting rid of all manner of civil liberties... it's nice that his lust for space weaponry may spark a renaissance space program. I'd be thrilled to see people in space sometime during my lifetime... and the spaceshuttle doesn't really count, since I could probably build something using only Estes D engines to get stuff into orbit cheaper.

Always look on the bright side of orbital lasers...

I was sitting at Half Fast subs eating my Tempeh BBQ goodness when some guy from Rolling Stone came up and interviewed me about my illicit music activities. All the time I was certain he would tear off he happy music dork guise and show his true RIAA stormtrooper self.

Instead, he just took down enough information about me for the RIAA to ship me off to their island prison where I will be beaten with rubber hoses for some indefinite period. Then Ashcroft will dance on my grave, but my ghost will come back and haunt Hilary Rosen's descendants until the heat death of the universe.

I just spent the last several hours destroying my car. Collin helped. When we started fixing it it shifted fine. Now, if you wanted to shift you would need to stick inhumanly strong fingers into a hole full of greasy steel.

I hate cars. They never work the way they're supposed to. I'm fairly certain the tallbike was put together with more care and feeling than has been put into my car over 28 years. The tallbike is also more dependable.

I also hate hearing about people's loveless sexual exploits... and the radio... I don't much care for it either.

Mark Twain is all right though. And sushi. And smoothies made with bananas. Down comforters are good too, in addition to computers with processors that don't have microfractures. Girls that are nice to me are good too... and books by Kurt Vonnegut and LCD goggles. I like support vector machines too.

I hate asserts, the concept of steak, C, C++, C#, and anything else that has anything to do with C.

I like things that are pretty, happy, cute, spicy, warm, soft, kind, made of soybeans, painted white, carbon fiber, acid free or direct drive.

support for an argument similar to my own by way of Graham: .posted by ben on Jan 22 at 02:24

“Every one cannot judge except from himself,” he said, reddening. “There will be full freedom when it will be just the same to live or not to live. That's the goal for all.”

“The goal? But perhaps no one will care to live then?”

“No one,” he pronounced with decision.

“Man fears death because he loves life. That's how I understand it,” I observed, “and that's determined by nature.”

“That's abject; and that's where the deception comes in.” His eyes flashed. “Life is pain, life is terror, and man is unhappy. Now all is pain and terror. Now man loves life, because he loves pain and terror, and so they have done according. Life is given now for pain and terror, and that's the deception. Now man is not yet what he will be. There will be a new man, happy and proud. For whom it will be the same to live or not to live, he will be the new man. He who will conquer pain and terror will himself be a god. And this God will not be.”

“Then this God does exist according to you?”

“He does not exist, but He is. In the stone there is no pain, but in the fear of the stone is the pain. God is the pain of the fear of death. He who will conquer pain and terror will become himself a god. Then there will be a new life, a new man; everything will be new . . . then they will divide history into two parts: from the gorilla to the annihilation of God, and from the annihilation of God to . . .”

“To the gorilla?”

“... To the transformation of the earth, and of man physically. Man will be God, and will be transformed physically, and the world will be transformed and things will be transformed and thoughts and all feelings. What do you think: will man be changed physically then?”

“If it will be just the same living or not living, all will kill themselves, and perhaps that's what the change will be?”

“That's no matter. They will kill deception. Every one who wants the supreme freedom must dare to kill himself. He who dares to kill himself has found out the secret of the deception. There is no freedom beyond; that is all, and there is nothing beyond. He who dares kill himself is God. Now every one can do so that there shall be no God and shall be nothing. But no one has once done it yet.”

“There have been millions of suicides.”

“But always not for that; always with terror and not for that object. Not to kill fear. He who kills himself only to kill fear will become a god at once.”

The worst reaction to crime is to abandon cities, moonlit walks and late night pizza. Giving up the good aspects of cities for fear of the bad will only make cities entirely unliveable. It will not eliminate crime, but create more suburbs.

Paranoia will never eliminate crime. It will disappear by becoming meaningless, not through punishment.

As the standard of living continues to increase everywhere, people become less desperate and hence less violent.

We can either embrace a future where material possessions become increasingly irrelevant as the means of production increases, or we can cling greedily to past mores, hoping only to increase our standard of living relative to others .

The future will have many LEDs.: .posted by ben on Jan 22 at 02:24
