Rob, the crumpet shop guy (the owner's son?), is in a hip hop group. They were on the radio, and I think he swore in the song they played.

"In a banal setting at an inconvenient time, would beauty transcend?"

Answer, not really. And this warms the cockles of my cynical heart.

Warning, it's a long article...

Paul Robeson has a posse.

I accidentally got one of his records a while back, it was in a "Songs of Joe Hill" sleeve. I had no idea he was such an accomplished person, or that he was blackballed. Listen to the NPR piece. If I get around to it, I'll rip the record and post it, pops and all.

I've been alluded to.

...shenandoah davis sits in her room and writes songs by herself instead of making new friends in her new city. one such song recently caused a car accident in chicago when a computer programmer from ghana found the music to be so unpleasing to his ears that he unbuckled his seatbelt and climbed to the front of the car, scaring the driver who then plowed the car directly into a lamp-post. (aforementioned song has since been removed from myspace.)...

-Shenni

Also, I wasn't called a programmer... which makes me happy.

I missed Cradle of Filth at the Showbox last night. As you might suspect, I'm deeply saddened by this.

irrelevant: are you coming to cow-land?

also, any thoughts on my current dying-ibooky issue-- when i try to adjust the angle of my ibook screen, it often goes totally black. could there be a cable loose or something?

I get to Chicago Thursday.

A cable loose sounds like a reasonable guess. Surely it's under warranty...

Plug the Sunday Schwabacher Soiree!

Meyer, who is lives in Ben's building (the Schwabacher) and is supposedly in the band The Glasses, will supposedly be on KEXP with said band tomorrow night at 6:00PM PST. There is really no reason for you to miss it since the band is good (at least they were good last year when Ben and I heard them with British Sea Power) and KEXP is down with the intarwebs and has five different streams for you to listen to, no matter where you might live or what type of device you are listening on.

I'm playing along to some live Soul Coughing by squeaking a floorboard with my left foot at 4 in the morning... unconsciously.

They're the same, right?

Thank you God for this fine day
And bless all the children all over the world
Thank you for the plants and the animals
Oh bring me sweet dreams tonight
And help me be good tomorrow

Noah's ark came to my house one day
With all of his animals and took me away
Oh Noah's ark came to my house one day
With all of his animals and took me away

-Cocorosie, "Noah's Ark"

I slept all day
awoke with distaste
and I railed,
and I raved

That the difference between
the sprout and the bean
is a golden ring,
it is a twisted string.
And you can ask the counselor;
you can ask the king;
and they'll say the same thing;
and it's a funny thing:

-Joanna Newsom, "Sprout and the Bean"

This is too confusing... I'm just going to listen to New Order instead.

hear me oh gods of indinessitude!

I understand The Tragically Hip have been around too long to be indie, but they were indie, maybe a few years ago... How? I don't understand how. The singer sounds exactly like Michael Stipe, stranger the song "Nautical Disaster" sounds like it was written and performed by Live. How can a band that sounds the same as the juggernaut that is REM be indie?

I really can't imagine a bunch of hipsters rocking out to Throwing Copper, so how does this work?

Someone explain. Come on Andres, are you still lurking out there somewhere? Surely you have an answer...

Isn't a band supposed to suck if it stole something from a Guided by Voices song that only two people have ever heard? What of a band that rips off Live?
