Who is pauline?

posted by collin on 05.04.14 at 23:25, admin, 2 comments

Did we change the way comments show up on the main page, or did we never restrict them in the first place...

I thought only user comments showed up, and pauline is not on the user list. (see graham's laptop/coffee heater post)

And who is pauline? Do we (some one) know her?

comment by collin on 05.04.14 at 23:34
So, pauline's blog says she's 18.
I put my money on Alex being the link between her and I. Or maybe i've met pauline?
comment by graham on 05.04.15 at 02:40
Heh, I was wondering that myself. I just checked Alex's friendster friends list, and she's in it. Female, 19, Single, South SanFran, CA, Capricorn, artist.
Ok, I feel creepy now.
Ben unrestricted the comments after that troll that flamed us for removing the b2 link left.

I've been making new categories in the main blog for a while now. The rest of you have permission to as well...

Upload limits and such

posted by graham on 05.04.12 at 18:03, Misc, admin, 3 comments

I'm just curious what sort of upload speeds people are getting. Uploading 3mb generally takes me at least five minutes, so I usually go AFK while it's going. I've also started using WinSCP so i can resume failed uploads (and send multiple files at once).
It might be nice to raise the upload limit, but I can see Ben's server filling up with junk quite quickly if we do. After all, how long do I need to have my 60mb Hubble pic available?

And how do i make these posts go only to the Admin blog and not to mine also?

comment by ben on 05.04.12 at 18:12
to make posts go to the admin blog, select the radio button in the category thing. The check boxes seem to do auxiliary categories and blogs.

The main drive has 60gig free right now, so I wouldn't worry about the space. Sorry about the shitty upload speeds. Hopefully that will change in a month or two if I get a real home.
comment by graham on 05.04.12 at 18:22
I only have radio buttons for my own categories. There are none for nonplatonic or admin.
I changed the admin category name from null to admin. I figured it made sense to not have categories with identical names.
comment by ben on 05.04.12 at 19:56
oh.... wait.. I'm dumb. Links at the top....

that's the way.

sorry.

The radio buttons only show up in the primary blog though... hence my stupidity

little things

I was going to add some "allowed" (right now it's just jpg gif and png) file types but I don't have permission to edit /home/web/b2/blogs/conf/_admin.php

Also I don't seem to have permission to write in .../b2/blogs/media/ I was just going to leave the upload limit at 3MB and if i wanted to put a bigger file just use sftp.

comment by ben on 05.04.12 at 18:03
You can write to _admin.php now.

I'll go hunting for the thing that sets the upload permission. I remember seeing it....
comment by ben on 05.04.12 at 18:07
oh... that was my fault. it's 777 now.

I'm not getting email notifications on responses to posts here. I wonder why...

posted by ben on 05.04.12 at 02:27, admin, Leave a comment

When i put the image in my comment for the coffee menu, i had to post the comment then edit it and put the img tags in. It had removed the tags the first time for me too.

I noticed this too. It must be something to prevent nonusers from putting malicious html in. If I can find it, I can take it out..

if we got hit by comment spamming bots images in comments could get bad, or hilarious?

You can only post images if you are a user. So that's something... of course there's always traditional comment spam.

Would it be possible to have a link to it that's only visible to members?

That's easy. I didn't put that on the front page because login and admin didn't go there... I thought it would clutter things up and collin agreed.

This should work, but I haven't tried it:

<?php
if(is_logged_in()){
?>
<a href="http://nonplatonic.com/index.php/admin">I'm a link</a>
<?php
}
?>

Thanks. I've put the admin blog at the end of the bloglist on my own page, and I don't think it clutters things up there. You might consider doing that on the main page. If not, though, no big deal.

One thing I would like to see, though, is a link from the admin blog to the main page so I can just click on it to go through. =)

Right now you can add images to comments, but the add code button doesn't work. Something weird is going on with the passing from one window to the other...

I can fix that, but it we use backoffice instead, maybe we don't care.

There's also a problem with the skins that show comments on the front page (nonplatonic and marco's) showing comments twice in the leave a comment page. They are shown once in the skin and again in... I think it's _feedback.php. Easy to fix, but if I'm doing the back office thing I don't care.

Uhhhh yes.

buttons

posted by collin on 05.04.11 at 14:34, admin, 5 comments

How do people feels about more buttons for the comments, like the ones I see now as I write this post, link/block/etc.

Though I don't know what most of them do.

Also, how is this admin blog set up. Is it just that there are no links to it from anywhere. I guess it doesn't matter if I post "published" or "protected".

Are people looking at this besides me and Ben?

comment by graham on 05.04.11 at 16:31
I read the admin blog.
What would these extra buttons do? Do you mean the buttons in the comment header, or the buttons on the "Leave a comment" form? Buttons are ok with me, as long as we don't end up with 13 of them in each comment box.
comment by marco on 05.04.11 at 16:43
Okay, I'm reading this now too.

Would it be possible to have a link to it that's only visible to members?

About comments: Ben mentioned once the idea of writing comments in back office, by which I think he meant using the same interface as writing posts. This might be an idea worth exploring...

And do we have to do anything special to put an image in a comment? I tried once but the img tag was removed when I published the comment (and I haven't tried again since--maybe I just mistyped something).

It sounds like we want to use backoffice for comments.

I think I'm about ready to concede the gmail thing is the solution to our comments thing. I made a skin (wasabi3) that kind of does the horizontal comments thing... but I don't know how to make it work.

comment by collin on 05.04.11 at 11:16
Uh, I'm gonna vote no on the layout of the wasabi3 skin. It get's quite weird when there is a comment longer than the parent post. We could allways use frames, and lots of scroll bars... kidding.

I do like the gmail-like idea though. All hail google, our Lord and master.
comment by ben on 05.04.11 at 12:56
What's weird when the comment is longer than the post? It looked right to me. I'm not advocating it for the front page... I just think it's an intereting idea... and there ought to be some way to make it work.
comment by collin on 05.04.11 at 14:30
Maybe it's just the coloring, or not. As it is, you get a lot of blank gray space if the post is small and the comments are long.

eg Scott's blog with the wasabi3 skin...

http://nonplatonic.com/index.php/scott?skin=wasabi3
comment by ben on 05.04.12 at 01:54
I guess when I was looking at my pages and none of the comments were that long relative to the other posts.

All of you have permission to modify the skin. It's in /home/web/b2/blogs/skins/admin/ If you bork it, it's only a copy of the nonplatonic skin, so you all have permission to make a fresh copy.

Whould it be worth it to set up a non-publicly viewable admin blog for
design questions/discussion, bugs, suggestions, etc...
