There is an interesting study from Baylor University that ties the view people have of God with their moral beliefs.

What is fascinating about this is that, for Christians at least, you can pretty well predict whether someone is a good person based on the relationship they believe God has with the world.

Maybe this isn't all that unexpected; if someone believes in a vengeful authoritarian God and that man was created in God's image, then of course they're going to be a bad person. Still, it is good to see some numbers.

Veronica Mars Season Premiere devin http://www.hwaethwugu.com/blog http://nonplatonic.com/devin.php?title=veronica_mars_season_premiere&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 2006-10-03T19:33:07Z 2012-06-04T03:24:58Z

You should all watch the season premiere of the third season of Veronica Mars tonight. 9/8c on the CW.

As Ezra Klein writes, "if Karl Marx had written Nancy Drew, Veronica Mars would be the result."

Most of you probably don't have TVs (or maybe you just hide yours in the closet when company comes around), but there are presumably other ways to watch this. You really should.

The story of a 13-year-old girl who wants an abortion, but Florida DCF, her nominal "parent," doesn't want to let her. (Collin this is what I was telling you about last night).

Interesting Article About Meth Addiction in Montana devin http://www.hwaethwugu.com/blog http://nonplatonic.com/devin.php?title=interesting_article_about_meth_addiction&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 2005-04-24T20:28:24Z 2012-06-04T05:38:41Z http://www.newwest.net/index.php/main/article/546

An interesting series of articles about the intersection of prostitution and meth addiction in a small town in Montana.

“Methamphetamine is a disaster. We know that 13.9 percent of the kids from 13 to 17 in Montana are using it. We are the number two state in the nation for illicit drug use, number two for suicides. We had a needle exchange going in Kalispell that had 250 people in it in 2002, and by 2003 there were 900.” Then, Clem adds, with a look of pure frustration, “They cut off the funds, because the health department didn’t want to be seen as fostering drug use.” He continues, “67 percent of the women and 85 percent of the men in Montana’s prisons are there because of meth-related crimes."

But what should be the sanction, legal or otherwise, for enabling addiction, for feeding the meth economy, for taking advantage of weak, desperate people for your own gratification, for abusing a position of trust? And what's the lesson of a case in which a long series of “victimless” crimes somehow resulted in a lot of victims?

The meth problem, and it's ultimate cause, the loss of good jobs from timber, mining, and manufacturing, has brought about a social transformation in rural America. It's no longer the case that a small town is the safest place to raise a family (although, was it really ever?) and it seems the rural ideal will inevitably be replaced by that of the exurbs.

This is a fascinating paper on Failure-Oblivious Computing, in which bad memory writes are ignored and bad reads return manufactured results. The authors contend that in servers this increases availability and (!) security.

I'm not sure what I think about this, yet, but it is an interesting read.

The Gatekeeper Model devin http://www.hwaethwugu.com/blog http://nonplatonic.com/devin.php?title=the_gatekeeper_model&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 2005-03-22T21:02:16Z 2012-06-03T21:24:08Z http://battellemedia.com/archives/001338.php

There is a great excerpt from an interview John Batelle (BoingBoing!'s web/ad guru and search engine watcher) did with Barry Diller (former CEO of Paramount and Fox; his company has just bought Ask Jeeves):

JB: For now, there are still vast differences [between traditional media and the internet]: Old media tends to be closed; the Web is open. Will the closed model stand?

BD:The gatekeeper model? No, it can't. How can you trust a gatekeeper when you know the purpose of a gate is to open and close? . . .

Barry Diller has a bit part in a book I've been reading, Disneywar, about Michael Eisner's rise and fall at Disney. It's been fascinating to to read about the fallout when "new" and "old" media combined (AOL and Time-Warner, Disney's disastrous go.com). Diller sounds like he gets it (at least as much as anyone really does).
